Superstructure Magazine Redesign

ChallengeSuperstructure is published by Clark Construction Group, one of the most experienced and respected building and civil construction firms in the United States. Since its launch in 1983, Superstructure was distributed quarterly in a tabloid format to Clark’s clients, project partners, the media and employees. While Clark’s values, priorities and dedication is well established, the company desired updating the publication’s design and format to better showcase its expertise, portfolio of work and specialized service offerings. In addition, Clark was interested in alleviating the challenge of working with a limited structure due to the tabloid-style format, and also wanted to be able to leverage the redesigned magazine as sales tool to share relevant work to potential new clients.

Solution – From the onset of the project, Clark was interested in introducing a magazine format to drive the redesign of Superstructure. Bates Creative worked to keep the layouts very simple and organized to allow the reader to focus on the beautiful imagery that Clark showcases. Color and subtle adjustments in typography are defining characteristics that help differentiate the sections from each other. Bates Creative also redesigned the nameplate and customized the chosen font to fit the structural theme of the magazine. The redesigned nameplate has a technical quality to it that is reminiscent of architectural drawings and pulls in aspects of the beams used to frame the buildings and projects that Clark takes on for clients. The complete magazine redesign features an overall clean and modern look, helps to better showcase the content Clark is delivering, and closely reflects the high quality service and product that Clark provides.

“I am gearing up to return to work next week, but didn’t want to wait to say a big thank you for your work on Superstructure. A copy of the new and greatly improved magazine arrived at my house today. The issue looks fantastic! With your help, we were able to transform our antiquated publication into a sophisticated and sustainable magazine.”
