Magazine App Design

Challenge – Live Happy is a consumer magazine dedicated to not only educating people on the science of positive psychology but also to spreading happiness to communities across the globe through inspiring stories, columns from experts, tips and quizzes and celebrity interviews. When Bates Creative first partnered with Live Happy, we designed each issue in the classic Adobe DPS platform. While its digital issue was a fun and engaging iteration of the print magazine, the Live Happy editorial team wanted to take its magazine app to the next level. Live Happy aimed to embrace a responsive design strategy for its digital edition to offer a seamless user experience across all iOS and Android tablets and smartphones.

Solution – With Adobe’s announcement of the new AEM Mobile on Demand (formerly Adobe DPS 2015) platform in early 2016, Bates Creative advised Live Happy to adopt a new workflow that would utilize custom HTML templates to deploy its magazine content to its AEM Mobile app. The team agreed to explore Adobe MUSE to develop HTML templates to redesign the experience of the app. In working with MUSE, Bates’ designers approached the redesign of the Live Happy app with more of a UI/UX approach versus the flat page design strategy previously used when designing from the magazine’s InDesign print files. While the new app is designed responsively, the Live Happy team decided to lock the digital experience in portrait orientation to accommodate print advertisers. Bates designed Live Happy’s opening browse page to act as a “content storefront” for the magazine’s brand. This app’s opening browse page markets books, the most recent magazine issue, archived issues, as well as the brand’s podcast, store and website. With these browse pages, Live Happy can now curate its content into collections, paving the way for future content marketing strategies and promotions. The redesigned Live Happy magazine app, which launched with the April 2016 issue, embraces many of the new benefits that an AEM Mobile on Demand license provides. We’re excited to announce that Live Happy’s magazine app has already been recognized with a Gold MUSE Creative Award.
