Challenge – MediaDC, publisher of daily newspaper The Washington Examiner, decided to shift its business model to become a digital platform and weekly print magazine focused on political thought leadership. The redesign of the daily newspaper into a weekly gloss magazine had to take into consideration a new target audience as well as a refreshed content strategy to successfully reposition the publication’s brand.
Solution – Bates Creative was charged with the opportunity to create an engaging weekly magazine that pushed the creative boundaries of political journalism. The Washington Examiner redesign helped shape the foundation of repositioning the publication’s brand to offer news, analysis, investigative reporting and commentary on issues affecting national legislation and policy across a number of key areas. The target readership for the magazine is 45,000 government, public affairs, advocacy and political professionals in Washington DC and every state capital. The magazine design uses a wide range of graphic elements including photography, illustration and typography that are bold and evocative, mirroring the stories The Washington Examiner has to share with its audience.
“We are pleased to work with Debbie Bates-Schrott and her award-winning design team at Bates Creative on the design of the new print weekly.”
– Lou Ann Sabatier, CEO, MediaDC
