The Society of Publication Designers (SPD) recently announced the winners for its annual design competition and we’re proud to share that Bates Creative has been named a SPD Pub 51 Merit Winner.

Bates Creative designer Hasinur (Sam) Rahman, was acknowledged for his design of the “A Dutch Dilemma” spread in Cancer Today magazine’s Winter 2015/2016 issue, published by the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR).

The article examines the political struggle the Netherlands is experiencing between individual freedoms and public health as a result of its lack of restrictions on tobacco products. On the surface, the Netherlands is a country famous for its colorful homes, iconic windmills and abundance of tulips. Behind this façade of beauty, as detailed in the custom illustrated iconic elements, the country is enveloped in the growing danger of tobacco. The feature spread is being swallowed by waves of smoke that creep through the following pages of the spread. While the reader is progressing through the beautiful design of the article, the plumes of smoke that are actually encasing the country are also swallowing them throughout the feature.

Judged by a worldwide panel of top designers, the SPD annual competition seeks the very best in editorial design work. SPD will feature all winning designs in the SPD 51 Annual, a hardbound publication circulated to members of SPD and sold on Amazon, which will be published later this year.
