The Society of Publication Designers (SPD) recently announced the winners for its annual design competition and we’re proud to share that Bates Creative has been recognized with three merit wins for two clients in the SPD Pub 52 competition.

Bates Creative Art Director Jennifer Fose, was acknowledged for her design of the “Safe & Sound” feature spread in NACS Magazine’s September 2016 issue, published by NACS.

In this feature article, NACS informs readers on the importance of protecting company data from proprietary information to employee files. Jen’s design translates this theme into a playful interpretation of criminals navigating a computer’s motherboard and terminal. The spread pops with neon green text over a black screen to nod to the ominous threat of security breaches.

Bates Creative senior designer Emily Biondo, was recognized with two merit wins for her design of the cover and feature spread “Power Surge” in Signature magazine’s January/February 2016 issue, published by Association Media & Publishing.

Emily brought the cover story on the Internet of Things to life by manipulating 1,000 feet of hook-up wire, wrapped around and through an oversized poster board that had the cover story title “Power Surge” cut out of it. The rest of the board including the Signature nameplate was hot glued into place by using an outline of the magazine name. A contemporary and clean white color profile was selected for the entire cover design because it parallels with the idea that technology is seamlessly interconnected into our lives. The nameplate and the title art were then photographed in the Bates Creative studio, scaled down, and brought together in Photoshop to create the final cover design.

This physical, sculptural artwork was also leveraged for the feature spread design that was recognized by SPD.

Judged by a worldwide panel of top designers, the SPD annual competition seeks the very best in editorial design work. SPD will feature all winning designs in the SPD 52 Annual, a hardbound publication circulated to members of SPD and sold on Amazon, which will be published later this year.
