When Carol Highsmith first came to Bates Creative to redesign her gallery website, she told the team that her sights were set on creating an award-winning digital experience. She was honored with just that during the 2018 W3 Awards competition, taking home a Best in Show honor, two gold and one silver.

Since the beginning of 2017, Bates Creative collaborated and cultivated a relationship with Highsmith, Library of Congress’ visual documentarian. Highsmith leaves her home in Takoma Park, MD for months at a time to photograph all corners of this country. Or, in her words, “I am photographing America now. The real key is who are we and what are we and who are we visually? What do we look like?”

The beauty of Highsmith’s photography speaks for itself. But by enhancing her still images as cinemagraphs, it makes the website visitor feel as if they’re standing next to Carol as she snaps each photo.

Bates Creative and Highsmith celebrate the following awards:

Winning entries for The W³ Awards are selected by the Academy of Interactive and Visual Arts. The AIVA, a membership-based organization featuring visual arts professionals who embrace and celebrate the evolution of media, oversees all judging for the W³ Awards.

For the 2018 competition, W³’s the judges narrowed down the entrants to a handful of W³ Best of Show Awards, Gold W³ Awards, and Silver W³ Awards. Less than 10% of W³ awards entries are selected as Gold Winners and W³ Best in Show awards selections represent the highest mark of distinction–only the top 1% of all awards entries entered are recognized with this title.
